Spa is one of the best-known cities in Belgium and is located in the Ardennes about 35 kilometres from the German border. It is mostly known for its medicinal baths, which were frequented by wealthy people in the 18th and 19th centuries. Several springs in the surroundings are sources of cold water with a high iron content. There is a small spa in town, which has its own spring, called Pouhon Pierre le Grand, where people can also drink the mineral water during business hours. The Source Barisart, a spring outside town can also be visited. The origin of the name ‘Spa’ is contested. One theory claims the name comes from the German word ‘speien’ or ‘spucken’ (spitting) according to which a spring in the neighbourhood was named after. In the 14th century the town adopted that name.
FORMULA 1 RACE TRACK
In addition to spa guests, Spa is also home to the Spa-Francorchamps Formula 1 Race Circuit. With a length of 7.14 kilometres, it is the longest track on the Formula 1 racing calendar. Next to Monaco, the Belgian track belongs to the elite racing circuits. A demanding combination of curves constantly tests drivers’ skills, separating the ‘wheat from the chaff’ – the boys from the men. Much excitement ensues when the rain begins to fall in the Ardennes. An entire weekend without a single raindrop on the circuit, which in part consists of public roads, is rare indeed.
