SKYSCRAPERS AT THE EDGE OF THE MOUNTAINS
Only a short driving-time separates adventures in the untouched Rocky Mountain paradise from Calgary – a clean and safe big city. Calgary’s history began in 1875 with the establishment of a police station on the Bow River. The aim was to fight the illegal whisky trade. The prairies, which were once the habitat of millions of bison, was found to be also naturally suited to raising cattle. It did not take long until the first cattle ranches were established. Every year, during the first half of July, cowboys compete at the largest rodeo in the world, the Calgary Stampede. The cowboys show their skills at calf roping, breaking in of horses and wagon racing at break-neck speeds. When the stampede is over, the city returns to everyday business. Since the discovery of oil in the Turner Valley in 1914, oil is number one industry.
MANHATTAN OF THE PRAIRIES
To get your first real feel of the city, go up to the 191-metre high Calgary Tower, which overlooks the entire city. To the west, the Rocky Mountains reach for the sky; to the east, grasslands extend into the horizon. Back on the ground, the city of nearly one million inhabitants looks like a world metropolis. All year long, everything is within reach: Theatres and galleries, symphony concerts and ballet, dance bands and an interesting nightlife. You can enjoy and relax at hundreds of enchanting, affordable restaurants with their selection of international culinary specialties. When shopping on Stephen Street, you will experience what is proudly called the ‘Manhattan of the Prairies’: skyscrapers, boutiques, street-cafés, sculptures, and chic shopping arcades. In order to avoid what may feel like a polar expedition while shopping during the frosty Alberta winter, the city leaders had a network of skywalks built. These are heated glass tubes for walking high above the streets of the inner city.
