The palm trees and exotic plants in bestow a subtropical charm to Torquay, much like that of the Mediterranean or Tessin. Every summer, thousands of sun-seeking holiday-goers swarm the 35 kilometre-long stretch beaches along the English Riviera.
A TOUCH OF THE RIVIERA
During the day, the beach activities are the main attraction. The protected bay is a paradise for water sport enthusiasts, where large sailing regatta and pleasure boat races take place. The conditions for sailing, windsurfing, or water skiing are ideal. Worthwhile attractions include: Kents Cavern, a cave that was inhabited in the distant past; Cockington Village, a village with houses and original furnishings from the 17th century; as well as the Torre Abbey, built in the 12th century. Excursions and short treks along the coastline and to the romantic marshlands of Dartmoor in the heart of Devon County are a real experience, as the area is full of sagas and legends and is deeply rooted in the history of Devon and the surrounding area. Torquay is the birthplace of the most well-known crime novel writer in the whole world, Agatha Christie. Among her most beloved characters are Miss Marpole and Hercule Poirot. Because of the efforts of her work, Agatha Christie was knighted, and in the year 2000 she was awarded (post mortem) the Anthony award, for being the best crime and mystery author of this century. There are a number of sites in Torquay where you can see the work and retrace the legacy of this writer.
