WARWICK CASTLE
Warwick is a town known for its location on the edge of the English county of Warwickshire on the Avon river, and has about 30,000 inhabitants. The historic buildings from the 17th century in the town centre and the famous Warwick castle attract a large number of visitors from all over the world. Warwick castle is amongst the most beautiful and best preserved castles in all of England. According to legend, Ethelfleda, the daughter of Alfred the Great, had the first notable fortifications erected in Warwick in the year 914. This fortification replaced even older structures that had proved to be insufficient protection against the plundering Danes, who had devastated the town during the reign of Alfred the Great. After the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century, William the Conqueror appointed Henry de Newburgh as Earl of Warwick. He had the fortifications expanded and then converted into a Norman castle.
AN INSPIRING SMALL TOWN
Warwick is known not only due to the impressive fortifications but also because J.R.R. Tolkien is supposed to have taken inspiration from this locale for his epic tale “Lord of the Rings”. It is thought that Warwick was used as a model for two towns in Tolkien’s novels: “Edoras” was described in similar terms as that of the early town of Warwick, and the description of “Minas Tirith” resembles that of the Norman fortification.
