Language training in Freiburg im Breisgau
NOT TOO BIG, NOT TOO SMALL
This typical university town in southern Germany has inhabitants numbering 200,000 and a student population of about 25,000; it is small enough to easily get used to, but is certainly large enough to offer a good number of attractions. The outstanding landmark of this almost 900 year old city is the Freiburger cathedral with its 116-meter high gothic tower. Located in front is the cathedral square, where everyday except for Sundays a farmer’s market takes place. Characteristic of the charming old town centre is, in addition to the many historic buildings, its network of above-ground artificial streams. Since the Middle Ages, they have provided cleansing system as well as a means of cooling off on hot summer days. Due to the large student population, Freiburg has a lively and diverse nightlife. Many bars, pubs, and beer gardens offer great options for hanging out, and dancing in the clubs continues on into the early hours of the morning. For those who prefer more low-key activities there are theatres and concert halls with programs to suit many tastes.
A DEPARTURE POINT FOR EXCURSIONS
Freiburg lies at the foot of the Black Forest and in the part of Europe where Germany, France and Switzerland meet, making it an excellent departure point for trips into the beautiful scenery of the surrounding area, or the nearby cities of Stuttgart, Colmar and Strassburg. Also just a short distance from here, is Germany’s biggest recreation park, the Europa Park. The region is know for its mild climate; in fact, Freiburg is known as being Germany’s warmest and sunniest city.
A CULINARY HOTSPOT
Freiburg is considered the culinary heart of south western Germany, and a favourite destination for gourmands. The many restaurants serve up local specialties, but international cuisine at fair prices is equally available. Local specialties include tarte flambée, a local home made pasta (knoepfle), Baden wine soup with croutons, rabbit tenderloins in a mushroom sauce, asparagus dishes, trout wrapped in chard, or the world famous Black Forest cake.
