With its population of 140,000, it stands out because of its intimate yet open-to-the-world atmosphere. Taking a language course here is a truly wonderful experience because of its idyllic location, its quaint old town centre with its historic alleys and the great variety of sights.
A TOWN OF MANY ATTRIBUTES
This romantic town located along the Neckar River enchanted from early on such notables such as German writer Wolfgang von Goethe, Empress Sissi and Mark Twain. Of particular significance are the majestic castle ruins, which rise above the tops of the city buildings and where for five hundred years the prince electors from the province of Pfalz resided. Twice in 1997 and 2003, Heidelberg won the EU prize for it sustained development practices. Since 1386, Heidelberg has been home to one of the oldest universities in Germany. Thirty thousand students are registered here, and due to the high student population, there is a lively nightlife. Considering its relatively small size, Heidelberg has a great deal to offer in this respect. Many big name stars such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Carlos Santana, and Frank Zappa have performed in Heidelberg’s own “Cave 54” nightclub. In addition to a dozen different clubs, Heidelberg has many bars, restaurants, and movie theatres as well as regularly scheduled open-air events (festivals taking place at castles), and other cultural events.
